Ethereal Ice, once the son of a pair of survivalists that helped ponies migrate through dangerous, snowy terrain, isn't the kind of spirit you'd meet through an everyday natural death. He is the guide of the souls of lost children, those who are in danger of dying alone and scared. As he himself suffered such a fate in the mountains, he has willed his spirit to guide lost children to their final resting place, giving their final memories of the physical plane something warm and comforting.
